Oval Hole - 16 inch
New - 2004
|
$7,000.00 Now: $5,750.00
|
This guitar is an archtop with a warmer sound than the traditional archtop. The oval soundhole gives the guitar more sustain than the f-hole top. It has the projection and power of a good archtop, with the harmonic complexity and sustain more common to the flat top. This makes the guitar very versatile whether played with a flatpick or fingertips, fast or slow, loud or soft. The overall design of the instrument is intended to make the guitar as lightweight and resonant as possible. The only binding is a single strip of rosewood around the top and back of the body.
This one has Maple back and sides, German Spruce top and Rosewood body binding. Comes with a Cedar Creek Case.

$7,875.00 Now: $6,500.00

Tom Bill explains that in building the Genesis guitars he uses an intricate bracing system to produce a full spectrum sound that leaps from the guitar, that you can't say this guitar is loud so much as you can say it projects, not vibrates but responds. I say have the defibrillator on hand. This guitar is that amazing.
Ziricote back and sides, German Spruce top
Ebony binding on body, sound hole, neck and head stock along with Ebony finger board, bridge and head plate. Appointments include
Koa falling leaf inlay on neck and bridge,
Gotoh Delta series 510 gold tuners with black buttons, clear pick guard 1 3/4" Water Buffalo horn nut and lacewood purfling
25.4" scale length. Armitage Case

17 Inch Archtop
New - 2005
|
$15,600.00 Now: $13,500.00
|
Bill Collings makes these remarkable archtop guitars himself - the wait is three years or more. Bill prefers to make his archtops without pick-up and this is no exception. Acoustically the guitar is a monster, with roundness in the trebles, clean clear bass, and balance like a flat-top.
17 inch archtop, solid carved maple back and sides, solid carved European Spruce top, Schaller Tuners with Ebony Buttons, and a Calton case. This baby is the BOMB.
I ordered this guitar as a personal instrument and it has never been played outside of the shop. I am not a Collings dealer so cannot call it new, but it is darn near. |

Back and sides are of AAA Brazilian Rosewood - nice, straight grained annd quarter-sawn. Jamie says the wood reminds him of 1930's vintage Martins. Who am I to disagree? The top is master grade Adirondack spruce, complimented with a Pauua shell border. Binding is East Indian Rosewood. Bridge is Brazilian Rosewood, Fingerboard is Madagascar Rosewood. Gotoh tuners with gold buttons. Nice.

$7,000.00 Now: $5,300.00

Kauri Wood and Laurie Williams - New Zealand's gifts to luthiery.
This baby's got back! Back and sides are of flamed ancient Kauri -30,000 or so years old, but who's counting. Top and sides are of modern Kauri, which in and of itself is pretty darn old and getting pretty darn rare. Binding is Taraire, and purfling is tulip wood. The tuners - Gotoh 510's of burnished brass.
I ordered this before Laurie initiated a $900 upcharge for the Kauri top. At the Special Price, this guitar is about $1900 less than an identical guitar ordered today, before consideration of duty assessment. |

Laurie Williams describes this guitar as having well rounded bass and excellent balance and sustain. I fully agree. Plus, the guitar looks great and sounds even better!
The Tui model has a lower bout of 15 3/4's inches. Back and sides are flamed ancient Kauri, top is Special grade Kauri of the more recent variety. Headstock is Ancient Kauri as is the neck. Binding is Taraire, purfling is Tulip wood. Gotoh 510 tunders out of burnish brass. Armitage humidity control hard shell case.
This guitar is priced less than current replacement on Laurie's website only becuase the Kauri top has become a $900 upgrade since this guitar was delivered.

"This is about as close to a do it all guitar as one can get."
From Roy McAlister, luthier to the stars! Malasyian Blackwood back and sides. German Spruce top. Mini Schaller tuners with Ebony Buttons. Comes with a hardshell case.
One of our friends, Charlie, previewed this new guitar, from Roy McAlister, and provides his unique insight:
"Roy McAlister says he took his inspiration from the old Martin O.M. of the early 30's, incorporating vintage style scalloped bracing and light construction, with contemporary design and styling to provide today's guitarist with an amazingly versatile instrument. He has hit his design goal perfectly with this guitar.
This guitar is really a chameleon it seems to do everything very well! Played softly with fingers it gives a balanced sweetness to hymns, ballads and other gentle tunes in both standard and various alternate tunings. Notes are clear, easily defined and in perfect proportion to each other, bass and trebles are well matched and inner details easy to follow. This may not be the last word in the super rich, luscious overtone, trebles ringing forever and bass overwhelming the mix kind of guitar, but each note holds up perfectly and is just right. Driven with a flatpick the guitar changes to a great strummer and picker with all the notes blending nicely to a musical whole. While it delivers all its tone with a very easy hand, it stands up well to a much more aggressive attack, not losing its character in the least. It is a great accompanist to a singer and plays well with others.
While the Malaysian Blackwood gives somewhat of a rosewood color to the sound rich, good sustain, nice overtones it can at times have many of the best characteristics of aged mahogany dry, woody, great fundamentals. This thing can play the blues as well as a vintage Martin or Gibson. It seems to have the best of both rosewood and the mahogany without any of the excesses of either. While a very pretty guitar, this thing can get down and dirty!
While the look and feel are modern and the construction is flawlessly executed, the vibe is more of a great vintage Martin or Gibson. This might be as close to a do-it-all guitar as one might find.

The Penngrove a/k/a FT-16
New - 2006
|
$8,100.00 Now: $6,200.00
|
Holy Cow. Ask Bruce to build a great looking, easy playing sound cannon out of rare and remarkable wood and he knew exactly what to do. THE PENNGROVE.
Back and sides are Kingwood, Dalbergia Camatillo. Top is Italian Spruce, tuners are handmade by Nicolo Alessi with black MOP buttons. The binding and detailing is of Snakewood. Very cool shaped cutaway. Cedar Creek Case. A description of this guitar, from Bruce, is below.
The Penngrove has about 20 ancestors starting from 1975, so it is arguably highly evolved. It is a relabeled FT-16, my oldest current design from one point of view, but it is also only the 2nd guitar from the 4th revision of the design. This one uses Dalbergia Camatillo for the back and sides, a true rosewood from South America. This wood is heavier than Brazilian Rosewood (in the range of African Blackwood), as well as having a tighter grain structure. The acoustic quality of the raw wood was phenomenal, rubbing the pieces together made quite a racket as their band sawn surfaces bumped over each other. This wood is sometimes referred to as "Kingwood", which I imagine is due to the deep royal purple color that comes off when cleaned with acetone. The finished wood only hints at the color I experienced. I picked through a stack of over 50 sets at the supplier's warehouse, and this was the only quartersawn set in the pile, therefore the only one I bought.
The Penngrove as a model is intended to have a deeper voice and more power than my other flat-tops, while maintaining tonal balance across it's range. While perhaps best suited supporting a singer, it is entirely competent being picked with the fingers or with a flatpick. It has the modern standard string spacing of 2 1/4" at the bridge pins combined with a 1 3/4" nut, and the neck is slim without quite being skinny or flat. This model is my big gun, and realy should leave no room for excuses on my part, or that of the buyer who chooses to use it. |
